Designing in the French Alps

Hello all, my name is Claire and this is my stab at blogging. I felt this would be a good idea to keep family and friends updated on my life since I moved over 2,000 miles from home in January.
Right now I am living in France and working as a graphic designer for Salomon Sports.

Month 1

Okay so every post prior to this one can be ignored. That would be my lovely older sister acting like me promoting all her companies and foundations she created and owns.

So to start things out perhaps I should start from the beginning.

November: I found out I got the co-op in France I applied for.

December: a week before my departure for France everything was halted by an emergency retinal re attachment surgery. Had I gone to France without the surgery I most likely would have lost my vision for good… so I guess I can’t complain.

January: Finally made it to France. Culture shock, but tolerable. Realized that moving to France without speaking French is not such a good idea.

February: All moved in, new friends, new experiences, still sucking at French, though.

I don’t think it has entirely hit me that I am living in France. I mean, I know I am here, but I think once I learn a bit more French and get adjusted to the culture here I will feel like I am actually “living” the French lifestyle.

I live in a small small studio in “downtown” Annecy. there are about 50,000 people that live in the city and 100,000 people in total that live in all of Annecy. A lot live in the countryside. Big change from living in New York City last summer. I feel like everything has slowed down 100 times.

I live by the lake which is incredible to look at. The mountains run straight into the crystal clear water. Anywhere along the lake you walk you can see straight to the bottom; it’s the cleanest lake in all of Europe. My favorite thing to do is walk along the lake during the sunrises and sunsets and paint.

The Old city could literally be the real-life city of Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Cobblestone streets, canals running throughout the city and colorful buildings are everywhere. Markets on Sunday are the best. The farmers and carpenters from the country come in to sell their goods. Everything is so well preserved it feels like I am in back in time when I go to the Old City.

My job couldn’t be better. I have pretty much free reign over what sort of designs I want to do… oh, I work as a graphic designer for Salomon sports. I design the graphics on ski boots, helmets, poles and skis. Last Friday I went to the Ski World Cup in Val D’Isire. One of the many perks of working for Salomon, not to mention getting free ski and snowboard equipment :).

well I guess that is all for now, hopefully I will update this thing as time goes by.

All for now, salut!
